      <image:title>Our Vision - My Story</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Jackie Goldman (they/them), I live in Elmhurst and I am a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. By day, I work as a public health researcher at the People, Place and Health Collective housed at the Brown University School of public health. My research primarily focuses on preventing overdose and other harms related to drug use (like HIV, and hepatitis C). At my job, I routinely see how the War on Drugs, lack of affordable and low-income housing, and stigma, keep people in poverty, and cycles of incarceration and houselessness right here in Rhode Island. While I have always been invested in my community, a lot of my activism and passion for civic engagement started during my first AmeriCorps term. I, along with 10 other young people, moved every 2-3 months to do different infrastructural work, from trail reconstruction and forest fire prevention to building homes. One of the things that really hit me was that the government only ever wanted to throw band-aid solutions on major structural problems. I saw communities that needed major investments into infrastructure, social programs, etc., but instead had 10 18-24 year olds working for 2 months. The lack of true community investment was very much reinforced in my second term in AmeriCorps where I worked doing HIV/hepatitis C and overdose prevention outreach in rural New Mexico. Within 30 minutes of Santa Fe, there were full towns without running water and electricity. This was devastating to me seeing as just 30 minutes away was a small city filled with so much art and wealth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Vision - These feelings and experiences followed me to Providence. I came to Providence in 2017 to pursue my Masters in Epidemiology. During my schooling, I gradually became more involved with local politics. I started testifying at hearings and the statehouse and canvassed for several local and state campaigns during the elections in 2018 and 2020. After graduating, I began working full time in overdose prevention research. I mostly work with people who are unhoused and have no access to healthcare and treatment for substance use disorder. Like everyone else, my life changed substantially in March 2020. I was activated to work for the Department of Health for a few months because I have a degree in Epidemiology. I also started working with local legislators, and organizations like the Providence DSA, to rally support around bills that had the power to change people’s lives, like $15 minimum wage, Medicare For All, and a state-wide Green New Deal, in the face of global crisis. I also decided that I needed to run for office so that the people of Providence would be represented by someone who wants to work for everyone, and not just the wealthy elite, luxury developers, and corporate PACs.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Vision - I have many ideas for how we can build a better Providence. I want to have a city budget that invests in affordable housing and does not give millions to luxury developers. I want to have an elected school board that will invest in education. I want to see us dedicate sufficient resources mental healthcare, overdose prevention and treatment resources, as well as community centers, parks and community gardens. I also want to fix our infrastructure; we need to fix our streets and sidewalks so that they are accessible for everyone. I also want to create a more transparent government. Our politicians can be hard to reach and their priorities do not always mirror those of the community. I hope that this helps you see my vision, but a website can only do so much. You can always email, call or text me ideas about what you want to see changed in this city. I would love to hear from you</image:title>
